Downstrands Family Resource Fundraiser

On Sunday 9th March, the Clanree Hotel played host to a truly memorable evening as more than 500 people packed the venue for a special cookery demonstration fundraiser with Ireland’s favourite chef Neven Maguire. The full house enjoyed an evening filled with delicious cooking, warmth, charm and plenty of humour, as Neven kept the audience entertained while sharing his passion for great food and simple, practical recipes.
The event was made possible through the generosity of many people who freely gave their time and effort. Special thanks go to Kenny Maguire, Neven Maguire, and the team at the Clanree Hotel, all of whom donated their services to ensure the evening was a success. Their support, along with the help of volunteers and sponsors, allowed every euro raised on the night to go directly toward helping families who need it most.
The event raised an incredible €25,000, bringing the overall total raised by the fundraising initiative to more than €80,000 to support families in South West Donegal who are facing difficult times. It is a remarkable achievement and a testament to what can be accomplished when a community comes together.
Most of all, the night highlighted the extraordinary generosity of the people of County Donegal and supporters from further afield. Once again, they showed their willingness to rally behind neighbours and friends when help is needed. Their kindness and support continue to make a real difference in the lives of families across the region.

In December 2025, Portnoo Market Garden launched a Christmas Appeal that quickly grrew into a remarkable community fundraising effort. Inspired by the harrowing stories of local families struggling through the cost of living crisis, Barrie Quinn felt compelled to act. Determined to help neighbours facing a difficult Christmas, Barrie called on his followers and supporters to urgently rally together and support families across the community.
The appeal caught fire almost immediately, with donations streaming in from across County Donegal and further afield. Within the first hour alone, over €4,000 had been raised. After just two hours the total had climbed past €7,000, and the momentum continued to build throughout the day as more and more people stepped forward to help. By the time the appeal settled, an incredible €55,000 had been raised.
The funds will go directly toward supporting local people through grocery and fuel vouchers, distributed through local retailers to ensure families can access essential food and heating during the winter months. The approach also helps keep the support within the local economy, benefiting both families and businesses in the community.
The original target was €5,000, but thanks to the kindness and compassion of people throughout County Donegal and beyond, the appeal raised more than ten times that amount. It was a powerful reminder of the spirit of community that continues to thrive across the region, proving once again that when people come together, they can make a real and lasting difference in the lives of those who need it most.
